Hardware Asset Management (HAM) and Software Asset Management (SAM)

HAM and SAM solve different asset-management problems. HAM governs physical asset lifecycle and inventory; SAM governs software rights, compliance, usage, and optimization.

Hardware Asset Management (HAM) provides

Consider it when

  • Adopt HAM when the primary outcomes are physical inventory accuracy, stockroom control, hardware refresh, lease or maintenance management, and procurement-to-disposal automation.
  • Adopt SAM when the primary outcomes are license compliance, entitlement management, publisher audit readiness, software reclamation, SaaS usage, or software-spend optimization.
  • Adopt both when software compliance and optimization must be connected to the devices, users, contracts, and procurement records that support the software estate.
Where the capabilities overlap
  • Both are IT Asset Management applications and depend on accurate models, procurement data, contracts, ownership, and lifecycle governance.
  • Both can exchange useful context with Discovery, CMDB, Request Management, Procurement, Contract Management, and other service-management processes.
  • Neither replaces the other: a device asset record does not establish software license compliance, and a software entitlement does not manage the physical device lifecycle.

What it is (plain English)

Managing software licenses and subscriptions: what you're entitled to, what you're actually using, and whether those match. It closes the gap between over-buying (wasted spend) and under-licensing (audit exposure), across on-prem software and SaaS.

What must exist first

  • Your license entitlements: contracts, purchase records, agreements per publisher.
  • Software usage/installation data source (Discovery, SCCM, SaaS admin APIs).
  • Priority publishers (usually the big, expensive, audit-happy ones: Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Adobe).
  • A software asset manager and procurement engagement.
